Greetings From Your Evarts High School Alumni Association
Dear EHS Classmates,
It is with deep regret that this usually upbeat newsletter to EHS Alumni across the country must pass along terribly sad news. After some 8 years or so battling an affliction determined to rid it of life, Evarts High School finally was dealt a death blow by actions of the Harlan County Board of Education. After at least three laborious, time comsuming and in-depth studies by various panels scattered through the last 8 years or so, reported and recommended to the Board either a new school, (which you will recall never happened) a committee at the board instead determined to just ignore all the panels conclusions and request a 'waiver' from the State Board of Education to consolidate EHS, Cumberland and Cawood High School into one giant consolidated high school. Reportedly a combined support group of Evarts High School and Cumberland High School are interested in litigation in an effort to save both schools. However, unless construction of the new consolidated school proceeds along the lines of the new EHS construction approved by the Board many years back, the new school will be in operation long before any law suit would be ended.
According to reports from the 'waiver' hearing, the State Board apparently agrees that a 'Big New School' for all (EHS, Cumberland and Cawood will cure the ills of continued low test results of all three schools. Presumably the 'Bigger is better' theory will work in Halran County, although it is basically frowned on across the country as a failure. Figures initially indicate the new school will be for about 1300 students. I am told the Ky. Board itself however recommended schools of 500. (?)
In any event, it appears that EHS, reputedly the oldest school in the state, will soon be gone. We wish all our Cloverfork students the best of luck in the days to come. We expect they will adjust to the extra hours each day of bussing to and from school to the 'near Harlan' location of the new school.
Regardless of where our Cloverfork students end up in high school, your association will continue its efforts to help 'our' students. Our organizational laws are set up to help 'our' kids and we will continue all possible efforts to do so.
A celebration of the life of EHS will again take place this coming Labor Day Weekend. Come join us as we greet old classmates, friends and Alumni, and give each other supposrt as we compe with the passing of an 'Old, Old Friend.' (EHS 1936-200?)

Greetings:
The Labor Day Reunion this year will be our 21st reunion, and although there is the very distinct possibility that it will be our last reunion “At Evarts High School”, rest assured that even if “our” kids are in another place for high school, and we aren’t permitted to use the ‘ole school for our reunion, it will still take place at some home location, as long as there are alums out there who want to ‘go back home’ for a Labor Day Reunion! There is no information yet on a set timetable for the closing of Evarts High School and transferring our kids to some location ‘a long school bus ride’ away from Evarts. There is scheduled however, on June 18th, a court proceeding on a lawsuit against the County School Board Consolidation maneuvers in getting the Consolidation decision in the first place. More on developments as we learn them.
This years graduating Seniors benefited greatly from the generosity of you and your association. The annual Nellie Ball Woolum Memorial Environmental Scholarship ($10,000) and the Major Roy Robbins Veterans Memorial Scholarship (2500), were supplemented by additional awards of (nine) one year Scholarships to South East Community College, made available through the Nellie Ball Woolum Scholarship Funds, and matching awards by South East Community College. It is still possible for you to also contribute to the scholarship aid to our students. Checks and cash are greatly accepted in any amount. You’d be surprised how important each dollar can be to these kids going off to college. On one occasion f few years back, a $50.00 aid check from your Association was the difference in a kid going or not going to College. “You” gave, the student went. Without the additional $50.00 the student couldn’t have gone. Every dollar does help.
Come join us for the Labor Day Reunion. Help spread the word to someone you know who hasn’t been back, for a while, or ever. Bring some good news with you to relay to everyone else about their ole’ school, the classmates, the teachers, the places, the times and events. It’s always great to hear positive things about ole’ friends and EHS alums. I’ve been told that my pride REALLY shows at the assemblies when I get to tell about alums; ,, like Dr. Don’Pro Mills(56) being elected President of Optimists, International, International (and the 150,000 members nationally), or Jim Stout (60) being chosen to head Brittain’s Nuclear Program (not Brittain’s Creek, ENGLAND), or the dozen or more alums now school superintendents all over the country, one of ‘our’ football players being Mr. Football 1991 in Kentucky, (Jim Russell -59, Norma Stevens – 64 = Scott Russell – 92) our ‘girls capturing the Annual Miss Harlan County Pageant so often, our teachers and the academic team that went three years without a defeat to any county team (while decked out in ‘cool and smart’ blazers provided by the Association) our art teacher (Bob Howard – soon to take on other responsibilities, as the new Principal at EHS). Major Roy Robbins, (43) who gave to his country his services in every hostile action from 1942 thru the first Iraq Action, and on top of the 38 years service, funded the Veterans Scholarship, the many, many occasions that your association brought in dignitaries to speak to ‘our students, including the first Lady of Kentucky on numerous occasions (Mrs Wilkinson) the first Lady Appeals Court Judge, Sara Combs,, Governor Julian Carrol,, Attorneys General, The (2) youngest Circuit Judges in the History of Ky (Sid Douglas and Jamie Keller (former Hall Football Players) Aspiring politicians, industry leaders, including Toyota Vice President, UPS Chairman (KY). Our own General (the late) Jim Bickford, (EHS Band 52), and the entire 101st Airborne Band, right there in the EHS Gym! The list goes on and on, and continues to grow. There are many, many others that should be mentioned in addition to our own ‘folks who give us all pride in our school for the contributions made every day in their own communities that help a lot of people without ever being told, “You have done Good” I had other items to mention but,,, I’ll remember them by Labor Day. Come hear them then.
Thank You
Gayle Huff
HELP WANTED
We desperately need people to help us work in areas of registration, babysitting, etc. If enough people would volunteer, each could work for 1-2 hours and then go back to enjoying the reunion. As it is now, a few people work the entire time and never get to enjoy any of the reunion. If you are interested in volunteering an hour of your time, please contact Arlene Brown: P.O. Box 166, Evarts, Kentucky 40828, Phone (606) 837-3517. Please let her know as soon as possible so work can be completed.
