Greetings From Your Evarts High School Alumni Association
Our Annual Labor Day Reunion is quickly approaching. If current indications prove true, this could be our biggest and best gathering yet. Internet traffic (www.harlan.k12.ky.us/ehs) is showing a lot of interest this year from several classes anxious for reunions, and is helping spread the word to lots of alumni who were previously unaware of the reunion.
Also, and unfortunately, there is little “good” news to pass along confirming that our beloved EHS will survive as a continuing school, according to local news accounts of the plans and workings of the Harlan County Board of Education. However, there does appear to be at least some optimism for hope since the Board does seemingly change positions on important issues from one meeting to the next. Some encouragement for hope can also be taken from the fact that following Cumberland High School’s loud cry of outrage to Board actions regarding their school, recent board action is returning the 7th and 8th grades to Cumberland High School after those students were earlier assigned to other places. You may recall our own 7th and 8th grades here were moved from EHS with the loss of those students (and teachers!) resulting in the overall loss to EHS of several classes which had previously been possible with the larger student group. Hopefully there may be some good news to relate at our reunion. Anyone “putting off” coming to the reunion “til next year” is cautioned to come on now….before it’s too late to meet in the old school building.
Otherwise, things are going well with EHSAA. A great class just graduated in May, adding the 2001 group to our alumni rolls. Your association again helped a lot of students with college scholarship money. This year saw another alum add to the scholarship program. Major Roy L. Robbins (USAF retired) Class of ’45, provided funds for a Veterans Memorial Scholarship in honor of all EHS veterans. The scholarship committee has named the award veterans by adding to the scholarship is invited to do so.
“You all come!” See you Labor Day.

Disco’ Bill Returns!
By popular demand of our alums Disco’ Bill Peterson, (58) will be handling the “Music & Dance” for the Saturday night festivities. We hope to have a big turnout to welcome him back. As you know Bill puts on a great show.
The Class of ’58 held its annual reunion at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, the last weekend of June 2001. Once again, the class funded the “Earl Rogers” honor scholarship. Any class member wishing to add further funds to the award are encouraged to do so.
“COOKING WITH THE WILDCATS” Cookbook and “TAP ROOTS” will be on sale Saturday

HELP WANTED
We desperately need people to help us work in areas of registration, babysitting, etc. If enough people would volunteer, each could work for 1-2 hours and then go back to enjoying the reunion. As it is now, a few people work the entire time and never get to enjoy any of the reunion. If you are interested in volunteering an hour of your time, please contact Arlene Brown: P.O. Box 166, Evarts, Kentucky 40828, Phone (606) 837-3517. Please let her know as soon as possible so work can be completed.
